Do you remember the last time someone gave you feedback? Was it effective? Encouraging? Feedback, a universal part of any training and professional environment, is often described as an objective evaluation of one’s ability and performance. But this is actually a fallacy, as objectivity does not exist in the human brain because our brains are always colored by prior experience. Acknowledging this limitation, we will cover the different types of feedback and discuss how to recognize and ask for the feedback you want. We will examine the important difference between “intent” and “impact” of feedback, particularly when dealing with race and cultural differences. Finally, we will work on strategies to increase a growth mindset to channel feedback into success. Be prepared to participate in interactive small group exercises to practice these concepts and network with other ASPET members.
