Short, impactful talks on key topics to inspire and equip you for success.
For those seeking a career in academia, a teaching statement, also called a statement of teaching philosophy, is an important component of a candidate’s submission. Yet writing a compelling statement can be challenging because there are rarely fixed guidelines for content and format. This talk will offer practical advice and tips for crafting an effective teaching statement.

3:00 pm – 3:30 pm | Navigating a Research Career in Pharmaceutical Drug Discovery: What Did I Expect?
My career has been dedicated to helping those who suffer from diseases originating in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Initially as an Academic researcher in Brain-Gut interactions (Professor of Pharmacology LSU Med Sch, New Orleans LA), then as the head of GI Discovery Biology (J&J R&D, PA), and most recently as a GI & Metabolic Health Coach in Lifestyle Medicine. This “story book” style narrative from my own pharmaceutical career will highlight three short research vignettes to illustrate what to expect (Integrative Pharmacology; progressing a drug candidate from early discovery - eluxadoline) and the unexpected (exploring novel biology and platforms in Biotechnology, decision-making and industry-academic collaborations). If you are considering this as your career path, then these real-life insights may challenge your perspective and stimulate you to ask lots of questions!

4:30 pm – 5:00 pm | Where Does Pharmacology Fit Within Biotech and Regulatory Sciences?
Wherever there is a receptor and a ligand, there is pharmacology. Nearly all of functional biology is governed by receptor-ligand interactions. It follows that pharmacological principles can be widely applied across the life sciences, even in unexpected places. Biotechnology and regulatory sciences are areas not commonly associated with the science of pharmacology. Yet, opportunities for pharmacologists exist, well beyond conventional drug discovery, within the wide scope of these areas. This presentation will highlight unique opportunities for pharmacologists in biotechnology and regulatory sciences.

10:30 am – 11: 00 am | What Pharmacologists Should Know Before Applying to Faculty Positions in Nurse Practitioner & Physician Assistant Programs
Advanced Practice Providers (i.e., NPs & PAs) play an increasingly important role in healthcare delivery, including developing treatment plans and prescribing medications, often with minimal physician or pharmacist involvement. Basic & clinical pharmacology are essential to these professional programs’ success, as are the pharmacologists & pharmacists hired to be on their faculty. Teaching NP & PA students—and working with NP & PA faculty colleagues—has some distinctions from teaching and working in medical, pharmacy, and PhD programs. The goal of this presentation is to share insights that will strengthen your candidacy when applying as a pharmacologist or pharmacist to faculty positions at one of the 600 accredited NP & PA programs in the U.S.

3:00 pm – 3:30 pm | Beyond the Bench: Science Policy, Advocacy, and Operations
Recent debate on the national stage regarding how biomedical research is funded has illuminated an underappreciated reality—supporting the research enterprise requires skilled individuals who support, enable and empower the basic and translational research enterprise. In this talk, I'll discuss my career journey from research to policy and describe my current role in science leadership at an independent research institute. We'll explore how scientists can engage in advocacy, develop policy expertise, and pursue career opportunities.

4:30 pm – 5:30 pm | Career Transitions from Academia to Pharma
After spending many years as a researcher in academia, the transition to industry can be intimidating. For some, this time in academia has extended well beyond formal training. The speakers will be describing their own unique career journeys and how they navigated the switch from academia to a role in pharma, while emphasizing that there is no “one size fits all” approach. This talk will touch on leveraging transferable skills, demystifying common misconceptions, the power of networking, and available resources for those considering a career transition to industry.
