The changing landscape of medical education results in the continuous evolution of educators beyond simply being content experts. In order to meet the needs of the new generation of learners, educators must be innovative and tech savvy. In addition, the recent pandemic has challenged the educators to shift to remote teaching. Speakers will present educational tools developed for the mastery of difficult pharmacology content; apps that can be used for “just-in-time teaching”; iBooks and ePubs for interactive self-study learning; and tools for interactive audience participation. Participants will experience these tools through brief interactive demonstrations.

Using Visual Aids to Facilitate Learning of Antibiotics

Teaching and learning the spectrum of activity for antibiotics can be challenging for medical students. A visual tool has been developed to aid in mastering the spectrum of antimicrobial drugs that are used in conjunction with a case series. Participants will be given the opportunity to discuss and explore the utility of the visual tool.

Interactive Audience Participation Tools: Engaging the New Generation

Students of today, generation Y and upcoming generation Z, are much different than their professors on how they learn, retain information, and interact with each other. Real-time interactive audience participation apps (PollEverywhere, TurningPoint, Kahoot, Echo360, etc.) provide a venue to determine student learning and maintain classroom engagement. Symphosium participants will be able to utilize one of these apps during the session to experience the utility and the app potential for student engagement.

“Just-in-Time Teaching” for Synchronous Learning of Pharmacology

As more schools adopt learner-centered curricula, content delivery occurs frequently outside the classroom. In-class time or synchronous instruction focuses now on prior assignments with cooperative problem solving and “just-in-time-teaching”. The use of an iPAD with different apps such as notability, jamboard and pages facilitates “just-in-time-teaching” and closes the loop between outside instruction and the virtual classroom.

Content Creator to Curator: eReader Enhancement of Content for Better Student Understanding

With recent trends and events, concern about student learning has prompted increased use of technology for self-learning, workshops and other didactic activities. This use, allowing students to have information in a more flexible format, raises issues of effectiveness of instruction, learning, and assessment. Creation of self-study iBook and ePub modules, that can provide an effective, interactive, formative way to improve student participation and learning, will be demonstrated and discussed.
