Panel members from scientifically diverse offices within the National Institutes of Health (NIH) will provide information on funding opportunities, resources, and institute interests. The panel will discuss how to get NIH funding for EB-related research and other opportunities as well as tips for success. Special attention will be given to training opportunites. Discussion will focus on both long-standing NIH interests as well as new initiatives in translation. During the session, a significant amount of time will be allotted for questions from the audience.

NIH Funding Opportunities-Overview
This presentation will provide an overview of NIH research and training funding opportunities. NIH programs help prepare individuals for careers in biomedical, behavioral, social, and clinical research. Funding opportunities for students, postdoctoral fellows and early stage investigators will be highlighted. The research and training funding supported by NIH institutes may vary and institute-specific information will be presented by speakers participating in this session.

Funding and Resources at the NINDS Division of Translational Research
The mission of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) Division of Translational Research (DTR) is to accelerate basic research findings towards patient use for neurological disorders and stroke by providing funding, expertise, and resources to the research community. DTR provides finding and resources (approximately $100 million annually) through grants, cooperative agreements, and contract to academic and industry researchers to advance early-stage neurological technologies, devices and therapeutic programs to industry adoption (i.e., investor funding and corporate partnerships). DTR offers a variety of programs that support the design, implementation and management of research activities critical to translational challenges in the treatment of neurological disease.

Funding and Other Opportunities at NIDDK
The mission of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) is to conduct and support medical research and research training and to disseminate science-based information on diabetes and other endocrine and metabolic disease; digestive diseases, nutritional disorders and obesity; and kidney, urologic, and hematologic diseases, to improve people's health and quality of life. In support of its mission, NIDDK participates in a series of funding opportunity announcements to encourage translation of basic discoveries to novel therapeutics. These funding opportunities span the typical pipeline for discovery and development of novel therapeutics, from target identification to clinical development, and include R01 and small business grant mechanisms. The NIDDK also supports a variety of other resources and programs to bolster research activities along this pipeline.

NICHD supports the full spectrum of basic, translational and clinical research in areas relevant to normal and abnormal human development. In this presentation, you will learn about NICHD’s initiatives and priorities in the areas of pharmacology and tranlational research on the safety and efficacy of the therapeutics and new drug development for maternal and pediatric populations. You will also learn about research funding opportunities in the areas of molecular targets, biomarkers, therapeutic devices and pediatric formulations as well as the NICHD pharmacology and therapeutics training program.

NCCIH-funded research also delves into the biological mechanisms of actions of natural products and their interactions with drugs. NCCIH funding opportunities range from candidate natural product discovery, lead optimization, preclinical study to clinical development.

Research and Training Funding Opportunities at NIGMS
The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) supports basic research that increases our understand of biological processes and lays the foundation for advances in disease diagnosis, treatment and prevention. In this presentation, you will learn research supported by NIGMS that takes a multifaceted approach to problems in pharmacology, physiology, biochemistry, and biological chemistry that are very basic in nature. The goals of supported research include an improved understanding of drug action and of anesthesia; mechanisms underlying responses to drugs; new methods and targets for drug discovery; advances in natural products synthesis; an enhanced understanding of biological catalysis; and research on anesthesia, burn injury, sepsis, and trauma.
