Substance use disorders are increasing in frequency and severity during the COVID-19 pandemic and, while the opioid epidemic is most prominent in the media, in many regions the more difficult challenge is the misuse of stimulant drugs. Overdose deaths attributed to stimulant drugs alone or in combination with other drugs (e.g., opioids) have increased dramatically over the past several years. The three FDA-approved medications available for treating opioid use disorder (methadone, buprenorphine, and naltrexone) are effective in some patients; however, the opioid epidemic persists and there are no FDA-approved medications for treating stimulant use disorders or the coabuse of stimulants and opioids. In the President’s Symposium, three experts will provide an overview and update of the current substance use disorder challenges facing clinicians and researchers as well as emerging novel approaches for developing more effective medications.
Speakers
Jean Lud Cadet
- NIDA IRP/NIH
Molecular Neurobiology of Psychostimulant and Opioid use Disorders
Dr. Jean Lud Cadet will describe data implicating epigenetic, transcriptional, and biochemical alterations in the long-term behavioral manifestations of psychostimulant and opioid self-administration. He will show that adverse consequences (foot shock) can help distinguish rats that continue to take either methamphetamine or oxycodone compulsively from rats that suppress drug intake. Epigenetic and transcriptional data will be presented that support the potential use of epigenetic drugs to combat substance use disorders.
Nadine Ezard
- St. Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney
Evidence-based Pharmacological Treatment of Substance use Disorders
Dr. Nadine Ezard is an addiction physician-researcher based in Sydney, Australia. She will share insights on expanding access to evidence-based treatment of substance use disorder from an Australian perspective, and provide case studies from current clinical trials.
Roneet Lev
- Scripps Mercy Hospital, San Diego
Frontline Cases of Addiction and Solutions
Dr. Roneet Lev is an emergency and addiction physician who has served at the White House and practices on the front lines. While the emergency department is full of COVID patients, the influx of patients with complications of drug use has only increased. Dr. Lev will share cases from the front lines as well and community solutions.
