Meet the New Officers!

Margaret E. Gnegy CHAIR-ELECT 2008-09

Professor of Pharmacology & Director, Substance Abuse Research Center, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan
Education: B.S. (1971, Chemistry), Ph.D. (1975, Biochemistry), West Virginia University.
Professional Experience: Staff Fellow (1974-1977), Laboratory of Preclinical Pharmacology, Division of Special Mental Health Research, National Institute of Mental Health; Assistant Professor (1977-1984), Associate Professor (1984-1990), Professor (1990-present), Department of Pharmacology, Director (2005-2007), Substance Abuse Research Center University of Michigan Medical School.
Research Interests: My laboratory is interested in the mechanism of action of amphetamine and the molecular mechanism by which it elicits efflux at the dopamine transporter. In particular, we investigate the role of phosphorylation in modulating the effect of amphetamine. Recently, we have begun to investigate interactions between the psychostimulants, nicotine and amphetamine.
Activities:
ASPET: Member of ASPET since 1981. Divisions – Neuropharmacology, Behavioral Pharmacology, Molecular Pharmacology. Membership Committee (1997-2000, Chair 1999-2000).
Other: Member – AAAS; Society for Neuroscience; American society for Neurochemistry; International Society for Neurochemistry; College of Problems of Drug Dependence.

Linda Dykstra, SECRETARY/TREASURER-ELECT 2008-09

William Rand Kenan Jr. Distinguished Professor, Departments of Psychology and Pharmacology, Curriculum in Neurobiology & Dean of the Graduate School, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill,
North Carolina
Education: B.A. (1966, Psychology/Mathematics), Hope College; M.A. (1968, English Literature), Ph.D. (1972, Psychology), University of Chicago.
Professional Experience: Postdoctoral Fellow (1972-1973), Department
of Pharmacology; Assistant Professor (1973-1979), Department of Psychology, Associate Professor (1970-1984), Professor (1984-present), Departments of Psychology and Pharmacology, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; Visiting Assistant Professor (1978-1979), Laboratory of Psychobiology, Harvard University Medical School; Visiting Professor (1984-1985), Pharmacology Department, University of Michigan; Visiting Professor (2001-2002), Department of Cell Biology, Duke University; William Rand Kenan Jr. Distinguished Professor of Psychology and Professor Pharmacology (1991-present), Dean of Graduate School (1996-present), Interim Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies (1999-2001), University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Research Interests: Research in Dr. Dykstra’s laboratory focuses on the behavioral pharmacology of opioid analgesics, both in relation to their pain-relieving properties as well as their tendency to produce tolerance and dependence. A very recent research focus of her laboratory involves the exploration of mechanisms underlying interactions between the glutamate system and opioid analgesics using an integrative strategy that combines genetic, pharmacological and behavioral approaches.
Activities:

ASPET: Elected to ASPET in 1978. Divisions – Neuropharmacology (Executive Committee 1993-1996), Behavioral Pharmacology. ASPET Finance Committee (2001-2004). Scientific Council (2004-2006). Editorial Activities - Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (Field Editor 1987-1997).
Other: Member - American College of Neuropsychopharmacology (Education and Training Committee 1992-1995, Task Force on Prescription Privileges); College on Problems of Drug Dependence (Board of Directors 1992-1996; Chair, Travel Award Committee 1993-1996; President 1996); Society for Neuroscience; Behavioral Pharmacology Society; European Behavioral Pharmacology Society.
